Samara

Samara is a charitable organization that studies citizen engagement with Canadian democracy. Through their projects they hope to strengthen the health of our democracy and encourage others to do the same. Samara was created out of a belief in the importance of public service and public leadership. They are named for a samara, which is the winged “helicopter” seed that falls from maple, elm and ash trees.The work of Samara focuses on three areas: political leadership; the participation of citizens in public life; and public affairs journalism.

The Electoral System of Canada explains how this administrative machinery works at the federal level. It begins with a look at Canada’s parliamentary system and outlines the electoral process, including what happens behind the scenes at Elections Canada, and the role and activities of the agency. The book also outlines the main characteristics of by-elections and referendums, describes how electoral boundaries are re-drawn and summarizes the regulatory framework for political financing.
