International law

The body of law that governs relations between nations as well as regulating trade and other legal relationships which involve the jurisdiction of more than one state.

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT)

DFAIT’s overall objective is to defend and promote Canada’s interests throughout the world. Spanning politics, commerce, societal concerns and consular functions, DFAIT deals with issues ranging from trade negotiation to the environment to disarmament to peace brokering, and much more. In short, DFAIT deals with any global issue that can affect Canada and which the federal government has deemed a priority.

International Association of Law Libraries

The International Association of Law Libraries (IALL) is a worldwide, cooperative non-profit organization of librarians, libraries, and other persons and institutions concerned with the acquisition, dissemination and use of legal information from sources other than their own jurisdictions. Founded in 1959, the IALL has over 600 members in more than 50 countries on five continents. The members represent all types and sizes of legal collections ranging from academic law libraries to corporate libraries, and from national and parliamentary libraries to administrative agency and court libraries.

International Labour Organization - NATLEX

NATLEX is a database of national labour, social security and related human rights legislation. Records provide full-text or abstracts of legislation and relevant citation information, and they are indexed by subject classifications. Each record appears in only one of the three ILO official languages (English/French/Spanish). Where possible, the full text of the law or a relevant electronic source is linked to the record.

JuriGlobe World Legal Systems Research Group

JuriGlobe is a research group formed by professors from the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa. This website provides lawyers and businessmen with a simple and modern device which enables them to have an initial overview of the applicable legal systems and the official languages which apply to the countries in which they are likely to operate. It also provides a visual educational tool aimed at illustrating and encouraging the teaching of comparative and international law.

Law Societies around the World

This site maintained by the Law Society of Upper Canada links to the websites of law societies and similar bodies which regulate legal practitioners in other jurisdictions. These websites typically provide contact information, descriptions of member programs and services, news, and notices to the legal profession. In addition, many law society sites now include the full text of relevant legislation, rules of professional conduct, committee reports, and recent issues of the organization’s publications

Treaty Law Division (Canada)

The principal functions of the Treaty Law Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade are, on the one hand, to provide legal advice, both within the Department and to other government departments, on treaty law and, on the other hand, to take care of the actual “nuts and bolts” of the Canada’s treaty-making activities. In addition they maintain up-to-date records of all pertinent information relating to the status of treaties affecting Canada.

World Legal Information Institute (WorldLII)

The World Legal Information Institute (WorldLII) is a free, independent and non-profit global legal research facility developed collaboratively by Legal Information Institutes and other organisations. WorldLII comprises three main facilities: Databases, Catalog and Websearch. The Databases include case-law, legislation, treaties, law reform reports, law journals, and other materials (1165 databases from 123 jurisdictions via 14 Legal Information Institutes). The WorldLII Catalog provides links to over 15,000 law-related web sites in every country in the world. Websearch makes searchable the full text of as many of these sites as WorldLII’s web-spider can reach.
